Midnight Oil


Wellington Show buildings 1984. The Earthship Australia Dude was a Sergeant serving in her Majestys armed forces.
At that time, Dude had similar thinking to his 
Dad
(WW2 veteran) .
 Which was OK, but not Spirit of 60s
 

 
 
 
 
 
Anyway, there was this non military guy at my Ministry of Defense job, who was the Dudes age and heavily into music.  
One day he said "Dude - we need to go and see this Aussie band Midnight Oil"...  The Dude abides.

Midnight Oil were touring NZ promoting their album 10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1 - which the Dude had listened to (but not really understood)...

Pre-gig , the Dude stood there unsuspecting... as the lights went right down .... 
The Dude could not even tell you what track they opened with...
Could not tell what they were wearing... 
but he remembers the Energy
He witnessed a  start to a gig - like never experienced before or since...
What was coming off the stage was breathtaking...

 

 

"Armistice Day" and "Only the Strong": were Dude standouts - the whole gig was fantastic - An instant Oils fan and understood the power of a Live performance...
Important NB: The Dude had never met any Australians to this point and it would be fair to say he had bought into some negative NZ media about our cousins across the sea. Midnight Oil in that way were (and still are) Fantastic Ambassadors for Oz                                                    
Also, the Dude rates this night very highly and was a vital psychological piece in creating Earthship Australia.

Years later while watching some late night Aussie TV (Rage), and they played the following song "Pictures"
 
At the time the Dude had no feelings about conservation
but this Environmental Anthem clip (coupled with the memory of the concert) ...
was the first step on a different route...
part of what the Dude calls ... Pathways to Nirvana
